When to Use a Drill Driver

Drill drivers are the right tool whenever you need a standard drill bit (HSS, spade, auger) or need clutch control for consistent fastener depth. Joinery and fitout work, cabinetry installation, fixing plasterboard, and any application where you can't afford to overdrive a fastener. The clutch also protects work surfaces and delicate fixings.

The Verdict: Can You Just Buy One?

If you had to pick just one: for general construction, an impact driver is the more often-reached-for tool. But you'll miss drill bit capability and clutch control. For cabinetry, joinery, and fitout, a drill driver is more versatile for mixed drilling and driving.
